Heat pump vacuum evaporation:
The heat pump vacuum evaporator can provide lower power consumption and excellent reliability for low to medium flow produced water treatment applications (40-12,680 gallons/day). Evaporation occurs under high vacuum conditions at an absolute pressure of 4 kPa, reducing the boiling point of water to a temperature of approximately 30°C.
The main components of a typical vacuum heat pump evaporator. An intermediate thermal fluid, R-134a or other refrigerant is compressed to increase its temperature and transfer the heat required for the evaporation of waste water in the boiling chamber. Then the same hot fluid is cooled and expanded by the air to absorb the latent heat in the waste water vapor and condense the vapor into a liquid for reuse.
Mechanical vapor recompression (MVR)
The low power consumption of the MVR evaporator allows the treatment of medium to high flow wastewater treatment applications (2,600-53,000 gallons/day) without excess or wasted hot water/steam and cooling water. The main components of a typical MVR evaporator. In contrast to heat pump systems, no intermediate thermal fluid is required in MVR systems. The resistance heater provides the heat required for initial evaporation. Then the steam generated in the boiling chamber is used for steady-state operation. The positive displacement compressor compresses steam adiabatically, increasing the pressure and temperature of the product steam. The heated steam transfers its potential in the primary heat exchanger, and at the same time provides evaporation heat for the waste liquid, and condenses the steam into product distillate for reuse. The secondary heat exchanger recovers additional sensible heat from the distillate to preheat the incoming feed water, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption (about 0.03 kWh/L water, which is 25 times lower than atmospheric evaporation). Although the boiling point temperature is slightly higher than the heat pump system (90°C), due to forced circulation, the high-speed liquid flow in the heat exchanger reduces scaling, deposits and dirt on the heat exchange surface.
